#4 GC Baseball Starts 2011 Season with Split at #5 Tampa

TAMPA, Fla. The No. 4 Georgia College baseball team (1-1) rebounded from a 13-4 loss in a doubleheader opener at No. 5 University of Tampa (1-1) Friday, taking game two of the doubleheader with an 8-5 score.

Centerfielder Patrick Daugherty (Kennesaw, Ga.) started his GC career on the right foot, leading off the game with a triple and scoring on a Josh Young (Lake Huvasu City, Ariz.) groundout for an early 1-0 Bobcat lead.

The advantage wouldn't last long, as Tampa rattled off nine unanswered runs. GC got a run in the seventh on an Ikaika Anderson (Austell, Ga.) pinch hit single. The 'Cats added two more in the ninth, one on a Shawn Haley (Canton, Ga.) double.

Senior Ryan Parson (Madison, Ga.) never got settled on the hill, allowing six runs over four innings in the loss. Spartan starter Evan Stobbs went six innings, scattering five hits and one run for the win. Damon Elder was 4-for-4 with three RBI and a pair of runs for UT.

Rightfielder Shawn Ward (Evans, Ga.) and first baseman Cody Maas (Alpharetta, Ga.) each drove in a pair in game two, backing a solid pitching performance by senior lefty Jason Nicholas (Wright City, Mo.). Ward ripped a double to plate one in the first, Maas tagged a two-run single in the five-run fifth.

Nicholas tossed 6 1/3 innings in the seven-inning game, allowing all five runs and fanning a pair. Freshman Matthew Robinson (Hull, Ga.) got the final two outs in the seventh to get his first save. Reliever Aaron Gerbasi gave up two earned runs in an inning of work for the loss.

Young scored twice on a pair of doubles in four trips. Third baseman Travis Echols (Suwanee, Ga.) was 2-for-3 with a double, while catcher Richard Pirkle (Norcross, Ga.) hit the first GC home run of the 2011 season as his lone hit in three trips.

In game two, Connor Obrochta was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs.

The Bobcats finish the three-game set at Tampa tomorrow, Feb. 5 at 1 p.m.
