GC Baseball Sweeps #20 UNCP 8-5 and 12-9

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College baseball team (12-9, 5-3 PBC) picked up a pair of huge Peach Belt Conference (PBC) wins Saturday at John Kurtz Field, sweeping No. 20 UNC Pembroke (14-8, 4-6 PBC) in a pair of offensive-minded ballgames 8-5 and 12-9.

In game one, the Bobcats pounded out 13 hits, withstanding an early push from UNCP with a pair of big home runs. GC got hits from the first eight slots in the order.

UNCP put up three in the first, and GC chipped away to take the lead for the first and final time in the third inning, 5-3. Third baseman Travis Echols (Suwanee, Ga.) went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run, swatting a two-run blast in the fourth inning.

Leftfielder Josh Young (Lake Havasu City, Ariz.) contributed his own round-tripper, scoring a pair in that crucial third inning. He finished 2-for-3 with three runs and two RBI. Patrick Daugherty (Kennesaw, Ga.), Cody Maas (Alpharetta, Ga.) and Clay Ardeeser (Loganville, Ga.) each had two-hit ballgames as well.

Reliever Taylor Hart (Colbert, Ga.) picked up the win (1-1) in five innings of work, scattering three hits and a single run, while fanning four. Matt LaMothe (Troy, Mich.) picked up his third save in a 1-2-3 ninth.

Game two featured one of the biggest comebacks of the season for GC.

Down 8-1 headed to the bottom of the seventh, the Bobcats out-scored UNCP 11-1 over the rest of the game to pull off the win.

GC put up four in the seventh, including three on another long blast by Echols.  He finished the doubleheader at 4-for-9 with eight RBI and three runs.

After a run in the top of the eighth made it 9-5, GC sent 13 batters to the plate in an epic seven-run frame. The biggest blows during that run were a two-run single by shortstop Tanner Funk (Kearney, Mo.) that tied the game 9-9 and an opposite-field RBI single by Echols that gave GC the lead.

Funk was 3-for-4 with three RBI and three runs, while first baseman Karsten Strieby (Blair, Was.) had three hits in five trips with a run scored.

GC reliever Morgan Ownbey (Suwanee, Ga.) allowed one run in the eighth to pick up the win (2-0), and LaMothe grabbed his fourth save with another scoreless ninth.

The Bobcats complete the series with one game tomorrow, March 11 at 1 p.m. The contest will also serve as "Miracle League Day" at GC, creating awareness and financial support for the Macon Miracle League.
