#21 GC Baseball Gets Split with Lander

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – With a six-run rally in the bottom of the eighth Monday, No. 21 Georgia College baseball (10-9, 3-3 PBC) salvaged a split in a doubleheader with Lander University (13-6, 4-2 PBC) winning 6-5 in game two after falling 5-4 in game one at John Kurtz Field.

All of the runs scored with two out in the eighth, as GC started with a one-out infield single by Heine Rivera (Loganville, Ga.). After an error and another out, pinch hitter Karsten Strieby (Blair, Wash.) drove in Rivera with a single to right. Bryce Williams (Manhattan, Kan.) followed with a single to left for a 5-2 score.

After a walk loaded the bases, Josh Young (Lake Havasu City, Ariz.) dropped a double down the right field line to plate Williams and Strieby for a 5-4 score. Young was the lone multi-hit performer, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run.

The surprise hero of the game was freshman second baseman Seth Bancroft (Sugar Hill, Ga.), in his first career start, getting his first career hit in a single to center to drive in the game-tying and game-winning runs.

Reliever Zack Hula (Kennesaw, Ga.) picked up his first GC win (1-0) going 2 1/3 innings scoreless, allowing just one hit. Righty Matt LaMothe (Troy, Mich.) went a scoreless ninth for the save, his second. The inning didn't go without some drama, as Young threw out the tying run at the plate for the final out of the game. Lander reliever Patrick Grady (1-2) surrendered six unearned runs in the loss.

Game one was a tightly-contested battle, with Lander getting the win thanks to great pitching and timely hitting.

Tied 4-4 into the eighth after GC had battled back with runs in three consecutive innings, Lander got a two-out clutch single through the right side from third baseman Colby Painter to score the game-winning run.

GC's Rivera went 2-for-3, while third baseman Travis Echols (Suwanee, Ga.) was 2-for-5 on the game. Bobcat reliever Taylor Hart (Colbert, Ga.) took the loss (1-1), throwing 1 1/3 innings allowing just one run. Bearcat reliever Kyle Tate (2-0) nabbed the victory.

The split in today's action gives Lander a 2-1 series victory.

The Bobcats are back in action Saturday, March 10 at 1 p.m. hosting No. 15 UNC Pembroke for a doubleheader, "Pack the Park in Green Day" sponsored by Kappa Delta.
