13-Run Inning Helps GC Baseball Split with Columbus State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – An impressive 13-run inning in game two helped Georgia College baseball (27-18, 17-9 PBC) to a doubleheader split with Columbus State University (28-18, 14-13 PBC) Saturday at John Kurtz Field. The Bobcats rebounded from a 7-6 loss for an 18-2 victory taking the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) series 2-1.

Game one was a wild one, as CSU rallied with three runs in the top of the ninth to take a 7-6 win. GC was top-heavy in game one, as the top-four slots went a combined 8-for-15 with six runs and five RBI.

Shortstop Tanner Funk (Kearney, Mo.) hit a home run and a double as part of a 2-for-4 game, scoring three runs and driving in one. Both Travis Echols (Suwanee, Ga.) and Cody Maas (Alpharetta, Ga.) were 2-for-4 with two RBI, Echols adding a run scored. GC tallied five extra-base hits among their 11 safeties.

Lefty John Clark (Duluth, Ga.) took his first loss of his GC career (1-1), working two innings and fanning five.

Game two was close until the third inning. Up 2-0, the Bobcats exploded for 13 runs, sending 19 batters to the plate and ripping 13 hits in the frame. Both first baseman Karsten Strieby (Blair, Was.) and third baseman Echols hit three-run home runs in the inning, finishing with four RBI each in that frame alone.

Lost in all of that impressive offense was an absolute gem by Matt Kaplan (Alpharetta, Ga.) striking out nine Cougars over six shutout frames, scattering four hits and three walks. CSU managed just two runners reaching third base on Kaplan (1-2) in his best outing as a Bobcat.

Strieby finished 3-for-5 with four RBI and three runs, while Echols was 2-for-2 with five RBI and three runs. Maas and second baseman Jeremy Donaldson (Winder, Ga.) each had two hits and two RBI. Centerfielder Patrick Daugherty (Kennesaw, Ga.) had a 4-for-6 game, plating one and scoring twice.

The win puts the Bobcats at 17-9 in league play, a .654 win percentage, good for third in the league overall. GC owns the top slot in the PBC West, and with today's victory has clinched one of the top two spots in the division for the final standings.

The Bobcats are back in action Friday, April 27 at 7 p.m., hosting No. 5 Armstrong, as the top team in the PBC West hosts the top team in the PBC East to finish off the regular season.
