Bobcats Sweep Bearcats, 8-6 and 7-0

GREENWOOD, S.C. – The Georgia College softball team (23-11, 7-3 PBC) racked up 21 hits on the day as they came away with a pair of Peach Belt Conference (PBC) victories at Lander University (10-15, 0-4 PBC). The Bobcats scored six runs in the top of the seventh inning to win the first game 8-6 and ran away with the second game 7-0.

The Bobcats got on the board first with a Kelsea Martin (Dacule, Ga.) sacrifice bunt, bringing in Kristen Brooks (Brunswick, Ga.) in the first inning and then an Abi Leroy (Dublin, Ga.) triple that brought in Whitney Okvist (Kennesaw, Ga.).

Chasity Davis hit a grand slam for the Bearcats in the fifth inning, giving them a 5-2 lead.

The Bobcats put six runs on the board in the top of the seventh, highlighted by a Martin double, bringing in Okvist. Taylor Campbell (Warner Robbins, Ga.) singled to bring in LeRoy and tie the game. Whitney Horton (Acworth, Ga.) capped the scoring with a double that scored Kristen Humphries (Columbus, Ga.).

Dani Gallucci (Orlando, Fla.) picked up her first save of the year as Erica Bell (Fayetteville, Ga.) improved to 2-0 on the year.

The offensive outburst continued into the second game, as the Bobcats put up two runs in both of the first two innings.

They added two more in the fifth inning as Campbell hit her first collegiate home run, bringing in Okvist.

Brooks finished off the game with her first collegiate home run in the seventh inning.

Reigning PBC Freshman of the Week, Marisa Boyette (Marietta, Ga.) went the distance for her 11th win of the season. Boyette allowed six hits while striking out eight batters and walking one. Her 82 strikeouts rank eighth in the PBC while her 11 wins ranks third.

Okvist had four stolen bases on the day, giving her 31 on the year, first in the PBC. She also scored five runs while going 4-for-6 on the day. Okvist's 158 career hits, ranks sixth in school history and is only eight behind Heather Jones (2003-06) at 166.

Brooks continued to shine in the lead-off spot, going 4-for-6 and scoring five runs in the two games.

The Bobcats return to the field Saturday, March 16 at 4 p.m. when they welcome UNC Pembroke (14-17, 1-3 PBC) to the Peeler Complex.
