SERIES HISTORY
The Bobcats and the Cougars have met 68 times on the hardwood, with CSU owning a 43-25 advantage in the all-time series. Columbus State won earlier this year at home 77-61, and owns a two-game streak.
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE 'CATS
Getting 21 second-half points from sophomore Terrell Harris including 13 in the final 10 minutes, the Georgia College men's basketball team (8-12, 4-9 PBC) toppled Georgia Southwestern State University (17-6, 9-5 PBC) 72-64 Saturday in the Centennial Center.
Harris took the team on his shoulders late, hitting 10-of-14 from the field overall to finish with 25 points. He added seven rebounds and a pair of assists; Harris has eight games of 20-plus points this season.
Royal Thomas added 17 points to the fray, including 9-of-10 from the line. The senior guard has now scored in double-digits for each of the last 13 games. Rounding out Georgia College's double-digit scorers was Ryan Blumenthal hitting all 12 of his points in the second half.
The Bobcats out-scored GSW 50-33 in the second half, including a 27-15 run early in the second half over a nearly eight-minute stretch. Georgia College took its first second-half lead on a Blumenthal layup with 5:43 left than grabbed it for good on the team's next possession with a pair of Royal Thomas free-throws.
SCOUTING THE COUGARS
The Cougars take the court at fifth in the PBC West Division, with a 5-8 conference record. CSU enters the weekend having lost three of their last four. The Cougars are seventh in the league in scoring at 78.3 points per game, and allow 74.6 points per contest, good for eighth in the PBC.
Guard Kenney Funderburk is ninth in the Peach Belt in scoring at 15.7 points per game, but managed just nine points against the Bobcats Feb. 1.
LAST TIME AGAINST CSU
Four double-digit scorers weren't enough, as the Georgia College men's basketball team (7-11, 3-8 PBC) lost 77-61 at Columbus State University (11-7, 5-6 PBC) Feb. 1.
Back in the starting lineup for the first time in nearly a month, sophomore Terrell Harris responded well to the change with a team-best 17 points and nine rebounds, narrowly missing a double-double.
Achieving his seventh double-dip on the season was junior Larrentis Thomas nabbing a game-high 14 rebounds to go with 13 points. Sophomore Ryan Blumenthal added 13 of his own, while Royal Thomas made it made it 11 games in a row with double-digit scoring at 10 points.
Those four double-digit scorers were nearly all the Bobcats had, however, as the final eight points of the game came from reserve guard Alex Reid. Just five Bobcats reached the scoring column.
THE COACH
Head coach Terry Sellers begins his 21st season at the helm of the Bobcat basketball team, owning a 347-233 (.598) record on the GC bench. Sellers picked up his 200th career PBC win against UNC Pembroke Jan. 3, 2013. He could pick up his 350th Georgia College win as early as Feb. 19 against Clayton State University at home.
CAN I HELP YOU?
Against the College of Coastal Georgia Dec. 22, senior point guard Aaron Robinson tallied an impressive 11 assists, just two off the school record set by Shejdie Childs in the 2006-07 season. The last time a Bobcat had more than 11 assists was Ty Rowland's 12 in the 2008-09 campaign. In the NCAA era of GC men's basketball, only Childs, Rowland and Bryan Harrison have recorded more than 11 assists in a game.
In that game alone, Robinson passed both Keb Burley and Marcus Langston to take ninth in Georgia College history for career assists. Robinson's now stands at 278, ranking two behind Harrison and seventh place all-time. At his current rate of 4.4 assists per game, Robinson would pass Harrison tonight, Feb. 15 against Columbus State University at home.
"FREE" - STYLE
Ryan Blumenthal is 56-for-62 from the free-throw line this season, hitting for a 90.3 percentage. Should this torrid pace hold up for the sophomore, he will edge the school record of 89.5 set by Mike Brown during the 1995-96 season. Brown went 85-for-95 that year. In order to qualify for the percentage mark, a player must average 2.5 attempts per game, and Blumenthal is at 3.1 per contest right now.
SHOOTING TELLS THE TALE
To find the success rate for Bobcat men's basketball, just check opponent shooting percentage. Opponents hit 39 percent (192-496) of their shots in Bobcat wins, to 48 percent (326-681 ) in Georgia College losses. The best opponent shooting percentage of the season came in a loss at UNC Pembroke Jan. 2, where the Braves hit .569 of their shots. The Bobcats' best defensive effort was Nov. 11 against Clark Atlanta at .318.
Bobcat free-throw shooting also plays a crucial role, as Georgia College is 72.9 percent in wins and 68.9 percent in losses.
REGAL FINISH
Senior Royal Thomas continues a torrid pace to finish out his career at Georgia College. The guard is averaging a team-best 16.7 points per game over the last 10, and is in the midst of a 13-game streak of double-digit scoring. Over the 13 games, he is shooting 58 percent from the floor and 75 percent from the free-throw line.
