Bobcat Softball Sweeps Tusculum in Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

by Mark Jagord, sports information assistant

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College softball team (6-2) extended its winning streak to four by sweeping Tusculum College (3-7), 3-2, and 2-0 Sunday at the Peeler Complex. Sophomore Abi LeRoy (Dublin, Ga.) was involved in the winning runs in both contests.

High drama returned to the Peeler Complex as the Bobcats recorded a walk-off win in the first game. Down 2-1 in extra innings, LeRoy singled to leftfield to score senior Whitney Okvist (Kennesaw, Ga.) for the winning run in the bottom of the eighth. Okvist's bunt single and stolen base put her in position to win the game. Senior Whitney Horton's (Acworth, Ga.) sacrifice fly scored sophomore Kristen Brooks (Brunswick, Ga.) to tie the game at 2-2 and set up the heroics for LeRoy, who led the team in hits with two.

The Pioneers took the lead on a solo home run by Tavi Parris in the fourth inning, and almost went up 2-0 later that inning but Brooke Rhodes was thrown out at the plate. Georgia College responded the following inning when Brooks' single scored junior Mikayla Sparks (Macon, Ga.) to tie the game. The Bobcat pair almost came through again in the bottom of the seventh to win the game, but Brooks grounded out to end the inning leaving Sparks on third base.

Sophomore starter Marisa Boyette (Marietta, Ga.) (2-1) went the distance giving up seven hits while registering nine strikeouts with no walks and one earned run.

In the second game, freshman Faith Flanders (Dublin, Ga.) (3-0) allowed just two hits in five innings with five strikeouts and freshman Carly Lewis (Seymour, Tenn.) earned the save pitching the final two innings. The Bobcats had a big fourth inning, while sophomore Becca Olson (Evans, Ga.) and LeRoy each had a pair of hits to lead the offense.

LeRoy scored the winning run when she stole home after leading off with a single in the fourth. Flanders doubled and then an Olson single scored Horton for the only two runs of the game. Georgia College got three of its seven hits in the fourth.

LeRoy finished the second game going 2-for-3 with a stolen base and run scored. Brooks and Sparks rounded out the Bobcat hits for the second game, with the latter getting a double.

The Bobcats are back in action Monday, Feb. 17 at Carson-Newman College for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
