Bobcat Softball Team Weathers Tornados Offensively

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

by Mark Jagord, sports information assistant

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College softball team (10-4) extended its winning streak to three by sweeping Brevard College (7-5) in an offensive onslaught at the Peeler Complex. The team only got to bat nine times between the two games but amassed 20 runs in winning 11-3 and 9-0, respectively.

It was only a matter of time before the Georgia College softball team had a day where the offense shined and that day was today. Both games were called early in the fifth innings due to the scoring differential against the Tornados.

In the first game, the Bobcats had a 10-run and 10-hit fourth inning that led to an 11-3 win. In that inning, four players had multiple-hits led by freshman Faith Flanders' (Dublin, Ga.) home run to centerfield and single. She also received the win from the mound in 2 2/3 innings of work in relief of sophomore starter Marisa Boyette (Marietta, Ga.).

Senior Whitney Horton (Acworth, Ga.) and junior Frankie Walls (Dahlonega, Ga.) each added a pair of fourth-inning singles, while freshman Carly Lewis (Seymour, Tenn.) singled and doubled. Sophomore Abi LeRoy's (Dublin, Ga.) single and sophomore Kristen Brooks' (Brunswick, Ga.) triple rounded out the inning's hits. The fourth inning's work scored more runs than the Bobcats' first four games.

In the second game, sophomore Taylor Campbell (Warner Robins) led the team with a pair of singles. The Bobcats had a three-run second inning and five-run third inning with Campbell getting the first hits of both innings.

Also adding singles in the 9-0 second-game win were senior Whitney Okvist (Kennesaw, Ga.), freshman Savannah Chapman (Cumming, Ga.), and freshman Danielle Bernstein (Cumming, Ga.), while both Horton and LeRoy added a pair of RBI and singles.

Lewis improved to 4-1 going five innings in recording the shutout, while allowing just three hits and no walks. For both games Horton, Flanders and Walls each went 3-for-4 at the plate, while LeRoy and Walls each netted four RBI.

The Bobcats are back in action Wednesday, Feb. 26 against Fort Valley State University for a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m. at the Peeler Complex.
