GC Softball Gets Swept at USC Aiken in PBC Showdown

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

AIKEN, S.C. – The Georgia College softball team (32-14, 11-9 PBC) dropped a pair of games to USC Aiken (33-12, 15-7 PBC) Saturday at Satcher Field. Junior Kristen Humphries (Columbus, Ga.) hit a grand slam in the first game's 6-5 loss, and the Bobcats took a 1-0 lead in the second game before falling 4-1.

In the first game, the Bobcats and Pacers played the first four innings scoreless. In the fifth inning, sophomore Abi LeRoy (Dublin, Ga.) got things rolling with a single that scored sophomore Kristen Brooks (Brunswick, Ga.) for the 1-0 lead. Humphries' blast would up Georgia College's lead to 5-0, but the Pacers scored six runs in the sixth and held on for the win.

Freshman Carly Lewis (Seymour, Tenn.)(15-8) threw 5 2/3 innings, allowing six hits and runs with five strikeouts. Both teams finished with seven hits in the first game. LeRoy and senior Whitney Okvist (Kennesaw, Ga.) led the way up front with a pair of hits each, with the latter registering a triple.

In the second game, the Bobcats took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Sophomore Taylor Campbell's (Warner Robins, Ga.) single scored junior Lacey Najafi (Suwanee, Ga.), but that's all the offense the Bobcats could muster in leaving nine stranded runners throughout the contest.

Freshman Danielle Bernstein (Cumming, Ga.) had two of the Bobcats' five hits, while Okvist added one more swipe to her record-setting total. Sophomore Marisa Boyette (Marietta, Ga.) (11-6) went the distance, allowing four runs off six hits with six strikeouts.

The losses drop the Bobcats to 11-9 in Peach Belt Conference (PBC) play, good for fourth in the league standings. Georgia College has clinched a PBC Playoff spot, and could pick up anywhere between the third to seventh seed, depending upon how the rest of the season fleshes out.

Georgia College will finish the regular season with a doubleheader against Lander University Tuesday, April 15 at the Peeler Complex starting at 4 p.m. The contest will serve as Senior Day for Okvist, Emily Hammond (Gainesville, Ga.) and Whitney Horton (Acworth, Ga.).
