#6 GC Baseball Splits Doubleheader with #25 Columbus State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The No. 6 Georgia College baseball team (26-7, 13-5 PBC) mounted a pair of impressive comebacks Saturday, one doing the trick and the other falling short. The Bobcats beat No. 25 Columbus State University (28-11, 16-5 PBC) 12-5 in game one, then fell 11-9 in game two, the split giving CSU the series victory two games to one.

In game one, the Bobcats found themselves down 4-2 in the sixth, exploding for six runs in that frame and another four in the seventh inning to run away with the game.

Leftfielder Ryan Sabalaskey (Carol Stream, Ill.), first baseman Clay Ardeeser (Loganville, Ga.) and shortstop Daniel Bick (Alpharetta, Ga.) had three hits apiece. Ardeeser drove in two and scored three times, while Bick plated two and scored two more. Sabalaskey scored twice and tallied a triple.

Centerfielder Rob Hogenkamp (St. Louis) was 2-for-6 with two runs and two RBI, while designated hitter Taylor Hinshaw (Winder, Ga.) had two hits in three trips, with three RBI.

Starter Spencer Thomas (Loganville, Ga.) went seven innings for the victory (3-0) allowing five runs on seven hits and fanning a pair.

Game two featured a pair of Bobcat rallies, the second falling just short.

Down 4-0 before coming to the plate, the Bobcats spread five runs over the first three innings to take a lead 5-4 on an RBI groundout from Hinshaw in the third.

CSU then posted their biggest inning, a six-run effort led by a three-run home run from Mike McClellan. The Bobcats used a four-run seventh to make the score 11-9, but could inch no closer.

Sabalaskey was 3-for-5 with a two-run home run in the second, finishing with those two RBI and two runs. Catcher Steve Hazel (Kentwood, Mich.) had a triple, going 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run, and Hogenkamp posted another 2-for-6 game, scoring once.

Starter Josh Taylor (Phoenix) couldn't advance past the fourth inning in the loss (5-2). Bobcat relievers Kyle Ward (Rincon, Ga.) and Jordan Brooks (Macon, Ga.) combined to hold the Cougars scoreless over the final 4 1/3 innings.

The Bobcats are back in action at Newberry College Tuesday, April 8 at 6 p.m.
