MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College men's basketball team (3-1) tallied its first loss of the 2015-16 season Friday night in the Centennial Center to Albany State University (1-0), 56-55. The Bobcats mounted an impressive comeback, but a late turnover would prove especially costly.
Georgia College trailed by as much as 13 in the second half, but a late offensive surge, led by senior Terrell Harris (Indiantown, Florida) and a career-game from sophomore Mark McCorkle (Cumming) helped the Bobcats mount the comeback. The Bobcats put together a 19-6 run in the second half, capped by a Harris layup with 6:29 left for a 48-46 lead, the team's first of the second half.
The Bobcats then stretched their advantage out to 55-49 at the three-minute mark, but would fail to score for the remainder of the contest. ASU got a big three on the next possession from Brandon Hudson, a free-throw and layup on the second and third possession to tie at 55-55 with 42 seconds remaining.
After a three was off target, the long rebound came to the Bobcats, but an errant pass ended up in Lance Dixon's hands for the Rams. Dixon went the length of the floor, was fouled with 1.4 seconds left and made one of two free throw attempts to get the victory.
Harris finished with 24 points, starting the season with four games of 20-plus points. McCorkle scored all of his career-high 10 in the second half, knocking down two threes and hitting 4-for-4 at the charity stripe.
Freshman Isaac Thomas (Trion) pulled in a game-high 14 rebounds, adding five points, three steals and two blocks. Kelvin Nwanze (Llagos, Nigeria/Archer (Ga.) High) swatted five shots as the Bobcats finished with 12 blocks on the game. The 12 swats sets a school record, beating the previous mark of 11 set against Tennessee Temple in the 1987-88 season.
Both teams struggled to shoot, ASU out-performing the Bobcats 32 percent (20-63) to 31 percent (16-52). The Bobcats won the rebound battle by 10 (47-37), but turned it over 22 times to the Rams' 15. Chris Wheeler and Earl Farnum led the team with 11 points each.
The Bobcats are back in action Monday, Nov. 23 at 8 p.m., traveling to Clark Atlanta University.
