MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College softball team (2-2, 0-0 PBC) earned a hard-fought split over No. 2 Valdosta State University (3-1, 0-0 GSC) Sunday in the finale of the 2015 Bobcat Blast, winning 3-2 and falling 8-5.
For the second day in a row, the first game of the doubleheader belonged to the Bobcats. Junior Marisa Boyette (Marietta) threw her second-consecutive complete game, allowing just two earned runs on six hits, while striking out four Blazers. The Peeler Complex came alive in the bottom of the sixth inning as Taylor Campbell (Warner Robins) hit a go-ahead solo home run in the bottom of the sixth to give the Bobcats a 3-2 lead. Valdosta State would get one runner on in the top of the seventh, but Boyette closed the door to give the Bobcats the upset over the No. 2-ranked team in the nation. Junior Abi LeRoy (Dublin) and senior Kristin Humphries (Columbus) brought home the other two Georgia College runs.
The second game provided just as much heartbreak as the first did excitement, as Valdosta State won 8-5 on a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh. The teams matched each other through the first four innings before the Blazers scored two runs in the fifth for a 5-3 lead. Down to their last at bat, the Bobcats battled back, scratching across two runs of their own in the top of the seventh on a Faith Flanders (Dublin) single up the middle. The smiles didn't last long as Valdosta State's Bree Wells hit a two-out, three-run home run to win the game in the bottom of the seventh. Campbell added one RBI in the loss and LeRoy brought home two.
The Bobcats are back in action Saturday, Feb. 7 as they host Anderson University at the Peeler Complex. The doubleheader action will start at 2 p.m.
