MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The No. 26 Georgia College baseball team (0-4) lost its home opener 10-5 to Newberry College (4-2) Tuesday night at John Kurtz Field.
Newberry jumped out in front early scoring runs in each of the first four innings, including a five-run second. The Wolves pounded out five runs on four hits and two walks in that inning, taking control of the game.
The Bobcats chipped away with a three-run seventh inning, cutting the lead to 9-5, but could inch no closer.
Leadoff hitter Jake Sandlin (Evans) couldn't be kept off the basepaths, ripping a pair of hits and walking twice, scoring two runs and driving in a third. First baseman Clay Ardeeser (Loganville) and leftfielder Colton Montgomery (Cartersville) each went 2-for-4, Ardeeser driving in a run and scoring another. Shortstop Brandon Benson (Loganville) tallied two RBI, both coming in on a single in the seventh.
Freshman Michael McKinney (Dalton) took the loss, unable to escape the second inning. Three Bobcat relievers had scoreless outings, as the game was broken up by six pitchers. Sophomore righty Kyle Ward (Rincon) was the sharpest, going two innings with one hit.
Newberry reliever Robert Westenrieder (1-0) got the victory, throwing four hitless innings and fanning five. Catcher Jeff Sneed powered the Newberry bats, going 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI and a run.
The Bobcats are back in action Friday, Feb. 13 at 4 p.m., playing host to West Virginia State University.
