Bobcat Softball Completes Perfect Weekend with Albany State Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

by Alex Cooper, sports information student assistant

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College softball team (6-2) defeated the Albany State Golden Rams (0-2) 8-1 and 4-2 Sunday at the Peeler Complex to finish the weekend with consecutive sweeps.

Pitching shone on a day where the Bobcats saw their record improve to 6-2 on the season, as Marisa Boyette (Marietta) and Carly Lewis (Seymour, Tennessee) both tossed complete games en route to two wins.

Boyette started the day with her fourth-consecutive complete game to start the season, tossing seven innings and striking out 11 Albany State batters. She only allowed two hits and one unearned run, while walking just one. The junior lowered her season ERA to 1.35. The 11 strikeouts are a career-high for Boyette, and the most by a Bobcat pitcher since Mandy Chandler fanned 12 Lander University batters April 18, 2009.

Georgia College tallied just seven hits in game one but scratched across eight runs. Junior Kristen Brooks (Brunswick) was the only Bobcat to record a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. Freshman Hannah Coursey (Sugar Hill) also scored two runs in game one.

Lewis took the circle in game two, notching her third complete game in four appearances. The sophomore struck out 10 batters while allowing just one earned run. She scattered five hits over seven innings while walking two Golden Rams.

Runs were more difficult to come by in game two for Georgia College, as they only crossed the plate four times. For the second time in as many games, Lewis got the scoring started with a solo home run, this one a no-doubter to center field in the second inning.

After Albany State tied the game in the top half of the third, the Bobcats answered back in the bottom half with three runs of their own. The first run of the inning scored on a passed ball, followed by RBI hits from juniors Abi LeRoy (Dublin) and Taylor Campbell (Warner Robins). Freshman Holland Coursey (Sugar Hill) was 2-for-3 in the contest, scoring one run and raising her season average to a team-leading .524.

The Bobcats will be back in action Tuesday, Feb. 10 as they host the University of West Georgia Wolves in a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
