#13 GC Softball Notches 10th Season Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

by Alex Cooper, sports information student assistant

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The Georgia College softball team (26-4, 5-1 PBC) won its fourth and fifth straight games Saturday, this time sweeping Flagler College (7-20, 0-4 PBC) by scores of 5-2 and 7-0.

The Bobcats continued their impressive first innings this season, scoring in the top of the first of game one on an Abi LeRoy (Dublin) sacrifice fly. The flyout plated junior Kristen Brooks (Brunswick) after she was hit by a pitch to begin the game.

The next score would come in the top of the third when Brooks led off with her second home run of the season. The blast to right field gave Georgia College a 2-0 lead. The lead would be quickly relinquished, however, as Flagler plated two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Both runs were unearned after the third batter of the inning reach on an error with two outs. The Saints then got back-to-back hits to tie the game.

Game one would remain tied until the sixth inning when the Bobcats took a lead they would not lose. LeRoy led off the inning with a walk and moved to third on a Taylor Campbell (Warner Robins) double. Junior Lacey Najafi (Suwanee) then laid down a bunt to score LeRoy. The 'Cats would score again in the sixth when pinch runner Emily Robertson (Dacula) scored on an error.

The final run of the game crossed the plate in the seventh when freshman Shawnda Martin (Calhoun) came home on a LeRoy RBI triple. LeRoy finished the game 1-for-2 with two RBI, a run scored and a walk.

Junior Marisa Boyette (Marietta) was stellar in the circle once again, going the distance for her 14th complete game and win of the season. Her seven strikeouts now give her 115 in 100 innings pitched this season. The righty's ERA is now 1.40.

In game two of the doubleheader, Georgia College would record its sixth shutout of the season, with sophomore pitcher Carly Lewis (Seymour, Tennessee) notching her third such game. She struck out six Saints over seven innings, surrendering just five hits. She lowered her ERA to 2.10 in her 13th complete game this year.

Georgia College would get things going in the second inning in game two, when freshman Hannah Coursey (Sugar Hill) sent a one-out offering over the wall in left center for a three-run home run, her third of the season.

The Bobcats were not done with the long ball quite yet as LeRoy hit her second of the season in the third inning, a two-run shot to make it a 5-0 lead. Georgia College would score one run a piece in the fifth and sixth innings, on a Kristen Humphries (Columbus) single and Baylee Hall (Hephzibah) double, respectively, for the 7-0 victory.

The sweep gives the 'Cats five straight wins and victories in 16 of their last 17 contests.

Georgia College is back in action Tuesday, March 17 when they take on Brevard College on the road. Doubleheader action is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
