GC Baseball Strikes Early to Crush Newberry, 10-4

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Georgia College baseball team (18-13) scored nine of its 10 runs in the first three innings and held Newberry College (20-16) at bay in a 10-4 win on the road Tuesday night.

It didn't take long for the Bobcats to jump out in front, touching the plate four times in the very first inning. Second baseman Dylan Cook (Portola Valley, California) had a two-run double and catcher Steve Hazel (Kentwood, Michigan) a two-run single.

Hazel finished 3-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored. Centerfielder Jake Sandlin (Evans, Georgia) had three hits in five trips as well, adding three runs scored and two RBI.

Designated hitter Brandon Purcell (Glennville, Georgia) stole a pair of bases and went 2-for-5 with a run and RBI, while leftfielder Colton Montgomery (Cartersville, Georgia) had two hits and a run. Shortstop Brandon Benson (Loganville, Georgia) was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs.

Reliever Brady Walsh (Marietta, Georgia) improved to 2-0 with three innings of work, surrendering two runs on five hits. Newberry starter Robert Westenrieder (2-3) took the loss, unable to escape the second inning.

Newberry designated hitter Nolan Schrenker was 4-for-4 with four singles.

The Bobcats are back in action Friday, April 3 at 6 p.m., hosting Francis Marion University.
