Bobcat Baseball Splits Doubleheader at North Georgia

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – The Georgia College baseball team (6-11, 2-7 PBC) split doubleheader action at the University of North Georgia (12-5, 8-1 PBC) Saturday, winning 16-4 before dropping the nightcap 7-3. The split gives the Nighthawks a PBC series win over the Bobcats, 2-1.

In game one, the Bobcats pounded out 17 hits for 16 runs, including a pair of round-trippers. Catcher Steve Hazel (Kentwood, Michigan) got the scoring started in the very first inning, ripping a three-run blast to right. Georgia College scored multiple runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to take over.

Tanner Giesel (Naperville, Illinois) provided a two-run single in the fourth, and Colton Montgomery (Cartersville) plated two with a single of his own in the fifth. A Brandon Benson (Loganville) double brought home a run in the sixth before Dylan Cook (Portola Valley, California) scored two with a home run to left center.

Cook finished 3-for-4 with four runs and two RBI, and second baseman John Davis (Marietta) added a 3-for-5 effort with three runs and an RBI. Giesel was 3-for-4, plating four runs and scoring another, while Hazel added five RBI as part of a 2-for-6 game. Benson and Montgomery added two hit apiece.

Bobcat reliever Chris Gammon (Chandler, Arizona) improved to 1-1, going three innings of scoreless ball for the win, fanning four. The Bobcats got hits from eight of the nine spots in the order.

Game two started with the Bobcats scoring in the first inning again, this time on a Jake Sandlin (Evans) solo shot to start the game. North Georgia answered with an RBI single in the bottom of the first, then single runs in the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings for a 5-1 lead.

Georgia College cut the lead to 5-3 scoring single runs in the seventh and eighth on Nighthawk errors, but UNG pushed it back out of reach with a two-run bottom of the eighth.

Sandlin finished 4-for-5 with an RBI and a run. Cook singled in the eighth, stretching his hit streak out to 17 straight games. Righty Cameron Busby (Grovetown) fell to 0-2 with six innings, allowing four earned runs.

The Bobcats are back in action Wednesday, March 11 at 4 p.m., playing host to the University of West Georgia.
