#17 Bobcats Split PBC Doubleheader With PBC Foe GRU Augusta

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

by Alex Cooper, sports information student assistant

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Georgia College softball team (22-4, 3-1 PBC) played its second Peach Belt Conference (PBC) doubleheader of the season Sunday, splitting the twinbill with GRU Augusta (11-3, 1-1 PBC), falling 4-2 in game one and taking down the Jaguars 10-5 in game two.

Defense haunted the Bobcats in game one, as they committed three errors and surrendered two unearned runs in the 4-2 loss.

Junior Marisa Boyette (Marietta) tossed her 12th complete game of the season, pitching six innings in the defeat. The loss is her first of the season, dropping her to 12-1. The right-hander allowed two earned runs on six hits while striking out six Jaguars, giving her 101 K's this year.

Fellow junior Lacey Najafi (Suwanee) provided the entire offense for the 'Cats in the first game, going 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. She singled in Abi LeRoy (Dublin) in the first inning to give Georgia College a 1-0 lead.

GRU Augusta scored two runs in the third to take a 2-1 lead, one being aided by a Bobcat error.

Najafi took things into her own hands again in the sixth when she tied the game with her fifth home run of the season. The slim Bobcat lead would not stand for long, as the Jaguars scored two more runs in the bottom half with the help of another Georgia College error to secure the victory.

The Bobcats struggled on defense again in game two, again making three errors and allowing three unearned runs this time. However, the offense showed up in the second game, scoring 10 runs, including six in the seventh inning.

Junior Taylor Campbell (Warner Robins) got the scoring started for Georgia College, plating LeRoy on a first inning single.

After GRU Augusta tied the game in the bottom of the second, the Bobcats put two on in the third for freshman Shawnda Martin (Calhoun). Martin deposited a pitch over the center field wall for her first career home run and a 4-1 'Cats lead.

The lead was short-lived, as the Jaguars tied the game in the bottom of the inning, scoring three runs on four hits and a Bobcat error. Two of the runs were unearned.

The game would remain tied until the top of the seventh when the Bobcat bats would really come to life. Twelve batters would come to plate in the seventh, six of them scoring on five hits and two Jaguar errors.

Freshman Holland Coursey (Sugar Hill) brought home the first run of the inning, doubling through the left side scoring Martin who led off the inning with a walk. After a run scored on an error, senior Frankie Walls (Dahlonega) laid down a bunt to bring home Coursey. LeRoy would follow with a sacrifice fly, plating Kristen Brooks (Brunswick) who reached on the error. Campbell would follow with a hit by pitch, bringing Najafi to the dish. She reached on a fielder's choice while Walls scampered home on an error. The sixth run of the inning came home on a Martin bases-loaded walk.

The 10-4 lead going to the bottom of the seventh would be plenty for pitcher Carly Lewis (Seymour, Tennessee). Although she did allow one run to score in the seventh, Lewis shut down the Jaguars for the win. The sophomore registered her 11th complete game and ninth win of the season. She allowed two earned runs on six hits and sat down five Jaguar batters via strikeout.

Georgia College is back in action Tuesday, March 10 hosting Carson-Newman College in a non-conference doubleheader at the Peeler Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
