#6 GC Softball Takes Pair from Lander, Grodecki Wins 200th

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The 200th career victory for head coach Jamie Grodecki was a big highlight of Saturday's sweep for No. 6 Georgia College softball (36-7, 14-4 PBC) 2-0 and 10-2 over Lander University (12-24, 6-14 PBC) at the Peeler Complex.

Grodecki now owns a 201-159 career record at four-year schools, including a 147-100 mark as Bobcat head coach.

All of the scoring punch for game one came in the very first inning, as after righthander Marisa Boyette (Marietta) put the Bearcats down in order in the top half, the Bobcats scored two.

After third baseman Kristen Brooks (Brunswick) reached on an error, centerfielder Danielle Bernstein (Cumming) tripled her home. Rightfielder Abi LeRoy (Dublin) capped the scoring with an RBI groundout. Bernstein was the lone multi-hit performer in game one, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run.

Boyette was masterful in the one-hit shutout (19-3), fanning five while walking just one. The lone hit was a groundball single up the middle from Lander's Destiny Clyde in the third. Boyette sat down the last seven in a row.

Game two started very similar, with the Bobcats owning a 2-0 lead after the first, a double by catcher Lacey Najafi (Suwanee) plating both runs. The big inning was the second, as Georgia College tallied seven runs on eight hits and a hit-batsman. LeRoy ripped a grand slam high off the netting in right center to plate four, and Najafi and Hannah Coursey (Sugar Hill) had back-to-back doubles.

Lander staved off a run-rule loss by scoring twice in the fifth to cut the score to 9-2. An inning later, Hannah Coursey would provide a walk-off home run, sending a 1-1 pitch over the left field fence for the 10-2 finale.

Righty Carly Lewis (Seymour, Tennessee) went all six in the victory, improving to 16-4 by scattering four hits for two runs, fanning five.

LeRoy finished game two 2-for-2 with four RBI and a pair of runs, while Najafi, Hannah Coursey and Brooks each had 2-for-4 games. Hannah Coursey and Najafi drove in two runs each. First baseman Faith Flanders (Dublin) was 2-for-2 with a run scored.

The win puts Georgia College at 14-4 in Peach Belt Conference (PBC) play, good for third place. The Bobcats are four games out of first with six remaining on the schedule; Georgia College clinched a playoff spot in today's sweep.

The Bobcats are back in action tomorrow, April 12 at 1 p.m., hosting USC Aiken.
