GC Baseball Wins Extra-Inning Battle at Lander, 10-6

Box Score

GREENWOOD, S.C. – The Georgia College baseball team (23-15, 11-10 PBC) scored four times in the top of the 11th inning at Lander University (21-23, 10-17 PBC) Sunday, taking down the defending Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Champions 10-6. The win gave the Bobcats a PBC series victory 2-1; Georgia College has won four-straight conference series.

Tied 6-6 in the 11th, the Bobcats got a walk and a single sandwiched around an out. After a stolen base put runners on second and third, Tanner Giesel (Naperville, Illinois) hit into a fielder's choice to give Georgia College a lead. The next four batters walked, including the final three with the bases loaded to plate three insurance runs. Lander could not retaliate in the bottom of the 11th, giving the Bobcats the win.

Georgia College jumped out to a 6-0 lead after three, including a four-run first. Lander picked up runs in the fourth-through-seventh innings to tie the game at 6-6.

Shortstop Brandon Benson (Loganville, Georgia) was 2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs, including a solo home run in the second. Catcher Brandon Purcell (Glennville, Georgia) plated runs on a single and a sacrifice fly as part of his 2-for-5 game, adding a run scored as well.

Bobcat reliever Chris Gammon (Chandler, Arizona) entered in the ninth and finished the game off, improving to 3-1 on the season by scattering two hits and striking out three. The loss went to Lander's Brandon White (2-3) in two innings of work. Rightfielder Taylor Kellner had two hits and a solo home run.

Georgia College wins its first extra-inning contest this season, coming in the first trip to extra frames on the year.

The Bobcats are back in action Wednesday, April 15 at 5 p.m., hosting Valdosta State University in non-conference play.
