GC Baseball Drops Opener at NCAA Regional to #14 North Georgia, 10-3

Box Score

THOMASVILLE, N.C. – The Georgia College baseball team (33-18) couldn't gain any traction in the opening contest of the 2015 NCAA Southeast Regional, falling 10-3 to No. 14 University of North Georgia (36-15). The Bobcats couldn't take advantage of early chances, and fell behind after a couple of big innings for the Nighthawks.

The loss puts Georgia College one defeat away from elimination from the regional, as next the Bobcats take on the winner of No. 12 Catabwa College and North Greenville University Friday, May 15 at 3 p.m.

North Georgia's starting pitcher walked seven over the first four innings, but big defensive plays, including a double play with the bases loaded ended each threat.

"Congratulations to North Georgia for playing a great game today," said head coach Tom Carty. "They clearly came out ready to play and we couldn't match their energy and intensity."

UNG put up three in the second, and another four in the fourth to bust it open. The Bobcats picked up all three of their runs in the sixth, cutting the Nighthawk advantage to 8-3 at the time, but the rally stalled there.

Second baseman Dylan Cook (Portola Valley, California), catcher  Steve Hazel (Kentwood, Michigan) and centerfieler Logan Mattix (Loganville, Georgia) had two hits apiece, Hazel and Mattix scoring a run each. Designated hitter Brandon Purcell (Glennville, Georgia) drove in two with a double in the sixth.

Lefty starter John Clark (Duluth, Georgia) took the loss (4-2), unable to escape the second inning. He fell victim to a couple of Bobcat errors, allowing three runs, but just one earned. North Georgia was relentless, getting at least one run off each of the four Bobcat pitchers.

UNG starter Dylan Peppers (7-2) got the win, allowing three runs over 5 2/3 innings. Josh Bryan added his fourth save after tossing 3 1/3 scoreless. Designated hitter Travis Naraine got the scoring started with a solo home run in the second, and finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and the RBI.
