Bobcats Walk-Off, Defeat Armstrong 4-3 in NCAA Regional #2

Box Score

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Just like the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Semifinals, Georgia College (45-9) freshman Holland Coursey (Sugar Hill) had the go-ahead hit against Armstrong State University (30-15), this time in walk-off fashion. The No. 2-seed and host Bobcats got past the No. 7-seed Pirates 4-3 Friday at the Peeler Complex.

The Georgia College win sets up a meeting with No. 6-seed Carson-Newman University tomorrow, May 9 at 2 p.m. Armstrong falls to losers bracket play against GRU Augusta at 4:30 p.m. tomorrow.

Tied 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh, third baseman Kristen Brooks (Brunswick) led off with a walk. A sacrifice bunt moved her to second, and one out later Holland Coursey took a 1-2 pitch up the middle. Brooks rounded third and scored as the throw from center went up the third base line.

The Bobcats nearly didn't have the chance for the go-ahead run, as it looked bleak after a three-run fifth inning from the explosive Pirate offense. A bases-loaded walk plated the first run, then first baseman Michelle Breen took a shot through the left side to score two more.

The Bobcats answered right away, loading the bases with one out in the bottom of the fifth, and Brooks singling to first base to score the team's first run. Two hit batsmen with the bases loaded tied the game, 3-3.

Bobcat starter Marisa Boyette (Marietta) (23-5) picked up the win, allowing the three unearned runs in the fifth, walking three and fanning six. Armstrong reliever Tori Bates took the loss (2-1) in 1 2/3 innings of work.

Neither team had a multi-hit performer, as the Bobcats were out-hit in the game 6-5. The Pirates left eight runners on, while Georgia College left 5.

The win gives Georgia College 45 victories on the season, tying the school record set in 2006, the last time the Bobcats advanced to the World Series.
