Bobcat Men Take Thriller at Augusta, 82-78

Box Score

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Georgia College Men's Basketball team (15-7, 8-5 PBC) got one of its hardest-fought wins of the season Wednesday night, topping Augusta University (12-8, 8-5 PBC) on the road 82-78.

Terrell Harris (Indiantown, Florida) matched his career high with 32 points, and was aided by Ryan Blumenthal (Acworth) at 19 points and Dwight Anderson (Minneapolis, Minnesota) at 12.

Up 79-77 with 36.9 left, the Bobcats ate up nearly all of the shot clock. The ball ended up with Anderson at just a few seconds left. His first attempt was blocked, but the senior rebounded and was fouled on his second attempt with 7.2 seconds remaining. Anderson hit one of two for a three-point lead.

Sophomore Mark McCorkle (Cumming) made the smart play, fouling in the backcourt with five seconds left. The Jaguars got just one of the two shots, handing the ball back to Georgia College with an 80-78 Bobcat lead. Blumenthal, the school's single-season record-holder for free-throw shooting percentage was fouled at four seconds with a chance to put the game away. The senior hit both and did just that, capping the 82-78 win.

"I couldn't be prouder," said head coach Mark Gainous in the post-game interview. "I've coached for 15 years and efforts like tonight can still make me speechless. I want to cry, I'm just so emotional. I told the seniors to step up and make plays, they did just that."

The Bobcats dominated the first half, led by 20 points from Harris. The Bobcats held a 40-27 lead at the break.

Augusta came out of the break on fire, battling back and knotting the game up at the 10:59 mark. Neither team could break away from that point on, but the Bobcats got scores on three consecutive possessions under the 3:00 mark to put themselves in the driver's seat.

Harris hit 13-for-17 from the floor, 2-for-3 from long range in an impressive shooting effort. The 32 points matches his career high set against Pfeiffer University in the second game of the season.

Blumenthal put together some of his best play this season, tallying 19 points, including 9-for-10 from the charity stripe. The senior added a career-best six assists as well. Anderson was a boxscore filler with 12 points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals.

The Bobcats shot 53 percent (27-51) from the field, the team's sixth time this season hitting more than half of their shots.

The win puts the Bobcats at 8-5 in Peach Belt Conference (PBC) play, good for fourth in the PBC West with six games left. The top four teams advance to the PBC Tournament at the end of the month.

Georgia College returns to action Saturday, Feb. 6 at 5:30 p.m. as the Bobcats welcome Columbus State University to Milledgeville for the 2016 Georgia College Homecoming Game. The game will be broadcast on ESPN3 as the network's Division II Game of the Week.
