Bobcat Softball Splits Conference Doubleheader with Columbus State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

by Justin Peacock, sports information assistant

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College Softball team (29-11, 6-6 PBC) beat out the inclement weather and split games against Columbus State University (21-18, PBC 5-7) at home Thursday, dropping game one 7-4 and rebounding for a 5-1 victory in game two.

Game one was on offensive struggle for the Bobcats who fell behind in the scorebook before and after the hour-long rain and lightening delay. The Cougars and Bobcats were tied up in a catfight in the first inning one to one after Lacey Najafi (Suwanne) cranked a triple through the left side scoring Abi LeRoy (Dublin). The Bobcats did take the first lead of the game logging another run in the bottom of the third after Kristen Brooks (Brunswick) sent Baylee Hall (Hephzibah) across home plate with a single.

The Bobcat lead was depleted in the fourth and fifth inning when the Cougars pushed out five runs. Coach Jamie Grodecki's squad attempted a come back after the hour long rain delay at the top of the sixth inning but fell short after only managing to plate one run each in the sixth and seventh innings. The last two runs were off of solo home runs from Shawnda Martin (Calhoun) and Hall. The round-trippers were Martin's second and Hall's third this season.

In Game two junior Carly Lewis (Seymour, Tennessee) was almost perfect only allowing one unearned run to score and four hits in the Bobcats' 5-1 win. Lewis had one strikeout in the game.

The second game was scoreless until the third when Brooks tallied another RBI on the day on a single. The Bobcats really began to run away with the game in the fourth inning, plating two more runs off a booming Taylor Campbell (Warner Robins) triple to right center to score Faith Flanders (Dublin) and a single to left side by Holland Coursey (Sugar Hill) scoring Campbell. Georgia College sealed the deal and the victory in the sixth with a Brooks two-run home run sending herself and Coursey around the bags. Brooks now has four home runs this season.

The Bobcats are back in action on the road at Francis Marion University this Saturday, April 2 at 1 p.m.
