PEMBROKE, N.C. - The Georgia College softball team split two games today in a road contest against UNC Pembroke, dropping game one 6-3 but roaring back to take game two 8-0 in six innings thanks to another complete-game shutout performance from Carly Lewis (Seymour, Tennessee) and timely hitting from the Bobcat bats.
The Bobcats trailed early but got on the board in the 4th after a Danielle Bernstein (Cumming, Georgia) stolen base led to a defensive mistake from Pembroke that allowed Lacey Najafi (Suwanee, Georgia) to score the first Bobcat run of the day.
After the Najafi run brought the score to 4-1, Pembroke added two runs of their own in the bottom of the 4th. An Abi LeRoy (Dublin, Georgia) double to right brought in Baylee Hall (Hephzibah, Georgia) to cut the Bobcat deficit to four in the 5th. A sixth inning Caroline Snider (Tennille, Georgia) squeeze brought in the third run of the day for GC, but that would be it for the Bobcat bats in game one, as Pembroke held off a late Georgia College rally.
Hall and Faith Flanders (Dublin, Georgia) excelled in the first game, each going 2-for-3, with Hall adding a pair of doubles.
Game two was all Bobcats.
A scoreless stalemate early on was broken by a Hall RBI single in the fourth. Taylor Campbell (Warner Robins, Georgia) started the fifth inning off with a bang, smashing a solo shot over the left field fence. Snider continued the parade of runs for the Bobcats with an RBI single and the Bobcats would bring in two more to make it a 5-0 score at the end of the 5th.
Another extra-base hit from Campbell – this time a double – brought in the first Bobcat run of the sixth. Snider then grabbed her second RBI single of the game. LeRoy brought in the 8th Bobcat run of the game a few moments later make it 8-0 in favor of Georgia College. Pembroke was unable to score against Lewis in the bottom of the 6th, invoking the mercy rule and giving the Bobcats the win.
Campbell finished 3-for-3 with two RBIs, while Snider went 3-for-4 bringing in two of her own to carry the Bobcat offense. Lewis struck out nine on her way to the 16th win of her season and the fifth shutout.
The Bobcats are back in action on Friday, April 8 as they welcome Georgia Southwestern University for a home doubleheader in Milledgeville.
