Bobcat Baseball Tops Augusta 9-4 at PBC Tournament

FLORENCE, S.C. – The Georgia College Baseball team (32-16) had a great start to their 2016 Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Tournament run, beating Augusta University (29-20) 9-4 Wednesday night.

The Bobcats did the job with big innings tonight, getting three in the second and another five in the fifth. First baseman Clayten Ayres (Kennewick, Washington) and leftfielder Garrett Green (Bogart, Georgia) each provided RBI singles in the second, while the big blast in the fifth was a two-run home run from third baseman Tanner Giesel (Naperville, Illinois).

Rookie starter Bradley Spinner (Roswell, Georgia) tossed 5 1/3 innings, improving to 3-0. He fanned four and allowed four runs, giving way to the Bobcat bullpen for a scoreless final 3 2/3. PBC Pitcher of the Year Cameron Busby (Grovetown, Georgia), junior Grant Khan (Richmond, Texas) and senior Chris Gammon (Chandler, Arizona) combined for three hits, no walks and four strikeouts.

All-PBC First Teamer Matthew Miller (Escondido, California) went 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI, while Ayres finished 2-for-3 with a run and the RBI. Catcher Brandon Purcell (Glennville, Georgia) and All-PBC Second Team outfielder Logan Mattix (Loganville, Georgia) each went 2-for-4, Mattix driving home two and scoring another, while Purcell drove in one and scored once.

In pool one, the No. 4-seed Bobcats are 1-0, No. 8-seed University of North Georgia 1-0, No. 1-seed Columbus State University 0-1 and No. 5-seed Augusta 0-1.

The pool-play style tournament continues tomorrow, May 12 with the Bobcats taking on North Georgia at 3 p.m.
