Bobcat Baseball Upsets #2 Tampa on the Road, 8-7

Box Score

TAMPA, Fla. – The Georgia College Baseball team (4-2) did something no other team has this season Sunday, dropping No. 2 University of Tampa (5-1) by an 8-7 score. The Spartans mounted a comeback in the late innings after Georgia College built an early lead, but the Bobcats closed the door for the win.

Georgia College put up runs in every frame from the second through sixth innings to jump out in front after digging a 4-0 hole in the first. The Bobcats took the lead with a three-run fourth, runs coming in on a Clayten Ayres (Kennewick, Washington) double, a Wesley Wommack (Monroe, Georgia) sacrifice fly and a Brandon Benson (Loganville, Georgia) home run.

Up 8-5 into the bottom of the seventh, Tampa plated a pair but would inch no closer, as Bobcat reliever Perry Keith (LaGrange, Georgia) shut down the Spartans in order over the final two frames.

Juniors Brandon Purcell (Glennville, Georgia) and Logan Mattix (Loganville, Georgia) provided the big bats today, each tallying three hits. Each also drove in one, while Mattix scored twice. Benson smacked a solo home run and scored three times, the round-tripper his fourth of the young season. Georgia College pounded out 12 hits, with every slot in the order save one tallying at least one safety.

Lefty Bradley Spinner (Roswell, Georgia) gave a strong relief effort, allowing just one run over 3 1/3 innings. Keith shut down the game for the save, tossing four innings with two hits and two runs.

The win marks the first over Tampa since the 2014 season, and the first victory for the Bobcats over the Spartans on the road since 2011.

The Bobcats are back in action Friday, Feb. 17 at 6 p.m., playing host to Embry-Riddle University.
