GC Men's Hoops Falls on the Road to Lander in Season Finale, 80-71

Box Score

GREENWOOD, S.C. – A pair of double-doubles from Georgia College Men's Basketball (15-13, 9-10 PBC) was not enough to overtake the Lander University Bearcat (11-17, 8-11 PBC) offense, falling on the road, 80-71.

The Bobcats set the tone early in the contest, working an early 10-point advantage just five minutes into Wednesday night's contest. They maintained their lead up until the 10-minute mark, then the Bearcats started to figure out a game plan. Lander went on a 25-13 run over a span of six minutes to take a two-point lead with four minutes to go in the half.  Georgia College managed to stick with them, heading into the break trailing 40-36.

Lander kept their momentum rolling into the second half, not surrendering the lead for the rest of the game. The Bearcats outscored the Bobcats 19-7 through the first nine minutes of the half, building the Lander advantage to 16 points with 10 minutes remaining.  The 16-point lead was enough for Lander defense to close out the win on the Bobcats, 80-71.

Georgia College showed a strong offensive front Wednesday evening, with four Bobcats reaching double-digits in scoring.  Freshman Kohl Roberts (Atlanta, Georgia) and sophomore Isaac Thomas (Trion, Georgia) were in that mix along recording double-digit numbers on the glass.  Roberts finished his evening with his sixth double-double of the year at 11 points and 10 rebounds. Thomas put up his fifth double-double of the year posting 15 points and 10 boards.

The other Bobcats in double-figures were sophomore Chaz Berry (Fayetteville, Georgia) who tallied a team-high 19 points with seven rebounds. Berry's 19 points Wednesday evening is good for his season-high Junior Brice Booker (Atlanta, Georgia) also had a nice evening, recording 13 points with five rebounds and four assists.

Wednesday evening's match up marks the end of the Bobcats' 2016-17 season. The Bobcats managed a solid 15-13 overall, despite a roster featuring 11 newcomers. GC Men's Hoops will lose two valuable seniors in guard Mark McCorkle (Cumming, Georgia) and forward Kelvin Nwanze (Lagos, Nigeria), but has a solid base returning to next season.
