Bobcat Softball Takes Two at Georgia Southwestern, 8-7 and 9-3

AMERICUS, Ga. – The Georgia College Softball team (22-12, 8-2 PBC) swept a doubleheader at Georgia Southwestern State University (14-16, 2-6 PBC) Sunday by 8-7 and 9-3 scores.

The first contest featured a flurry of late runs, with the Bobcats holding off GSW by a single score. With the Bobcats down 2-1 after 5 innings, Georgia College rallied for seven big runs in the sixth. Danielle Bernstein (Cumming) had a three-run triple, while Jessica Hayles (Gordon) and Hannah Coursey (Sugar Hill) each had run-scoring singles.

The Hurricanes had a five-run sixth to make it 8-7, but couldn't get another run. Hannah Coursey cut down the tying run at the plate in the bottom of the sixth with the bases loaded and one out, and the next batter followed with another groundout to cap the rally. In the seventh, GSW got a one-out walk, but the tying run couldn't advance.

Faith Flanders (Dublin) had a 3-for-4 game, while Bernstein, Holland Coursey (Sugar Hill), and Caroline Snider (Tennille) had two-hits each. Bernstein drove in three and scored one, Holland Coursey scored twice and Snider touched the plate once.

Starter Kayla Price (Indian Land, South Carolina) improved to 13-2 with the win, going 5 1/3 innings, allowing seven runs. Flanders got the final eight outs for the save.

In game two, the Bobcats jumped in front with four runs in the top of the first and never gave up the lead. Flanders provided a big three-run blast to center to get the scoring started.

Flanders finished game two 2-for-4 with five RBIs and two runs. The senior went 5-for-8 in the doubleheader with five RBIs, two runs and a pair of home runs; also going for 8 2/3 innings with a win and a save. Flanders improved to 5-2 with the victory.

Rightfielder Deja Lester (Jacksonville) had a 3-for-3 game, scoring three runs and driving in another. Third baseman Amber Coy (Warner Robins) and Snider had two hits each. The Bobcats hit four home runs in game two, a pair for Flanders, one for Lester and another for Hannah Coursey.

The Bobcats are back in action Friday, March 24 at 5 p.m., hosting No. 3 University of North Georgia.
