Box Score ALBANY, Ga. – The No. 24 Georgia College Baseball program (26-9) won its seventh-straight ballgame Tuesday, defeating the Albany State Golden Rams (11-21) on the road by a score of 10-5.
The Bobcat offense continues to put up big numbers as they plated 10 runs on 12 hits to take down Albany State, who managed five runs on 12 hits.
The Bobcats got off to a hot start yet again, as they pushed across three runs in the first frame to take an early advantage. Junior Logan Mattix (Loganville) got things rolling with a two RBI single to leftfield. First baseman Clayten Ayres (Kennewick, Washington) followed him up with a two-out RBI single to give the Bobcats a 3-0 lead after one.
The Golden Rams got a run back in the bottom of the third, but the Bobcats retaliated with a run of their own in the top half of the fourth. Freshman Cal Gentry (Perry) ripped a single to right center to drive in the fourth run of the day for GC Baseball, giving them a 4-1 lead. Albany State answered in the bottom half of the inning when they posted two more runs to put the game at 4-3 after four. Gentry had a great day at the plate going 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and runs scored.
Senior Brandon Benson (Loganville) extended the Bobcat lead in the sixth after driving in his 61st run of the year on a seeing-eye single to make it a 5-3 ballgame after six.
Georgia College broke open the game in the top half of the seventh when they posted a three-spot on the Golden Rams. Nate Schmal (Cumming) smacked an RBI double into right field, plating the first run of the inning. Ayres was next at the dish and drove in his second run of the day on another RBI single, scoring Schmal. Senior Phillip Stiles (Lumberton, New Jersey) also drove in a run on a single to extend the Bobcat lead to 8-3. Ayres also had a nice day at the plate with three hits that drove in two while scoring twice.
Albany State managed to work their way back into the game in the bottom half of the seventh by scoring two more runs to make it 8-5 after seven. The Bobcats added two insurance runs on a fielder's choice and another RBI single from Gentry in the top of the ninth to seal the 10-5 victory over the Golden Rams.
Kane Keith (Hogansville) got the start for Georgia College and earned the win after tossing 3 1/3 while allowing three runs on eight hits and striking out three. Sophomore Logan Howard (Cumming) threw a perfect 2 2/3 innings with three strikeouts to bridge the gap to the later innings of the contest.
Georgia College is back in Peach Belt Conference (PBC) action when they host the Augusta University Jaguars at John Kurtz Field Friday, April 14 at 6 p.m.
