#24 GC Baseball Splits Doubleheader and Clinches Weekend Series over Augusta

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College Baseball program (28-10, 14-7 PBC) clinched their sixth straight Peach Belt Conference (PBC) series with a 12-5 victory over Augusta University (16-23, 8-13 PBC) in game one of the Saturday doubleheader at John Kurtz Field.  The Bobcats fell in game two of the afternoon, 13-5.

Game one was an offensive battle that the Bobcats ran away with.  Georgia College tallied 12 runs on 16 hits opposed to the Jaguars who recorded just five runs on 12 hits.

The Jaguars got on the board early with a run in the first, but the Bobcats came right back with two of their own in the bottom half of the inning with back-to-back RBI singles from Logan Mattix (Loganville) and Wesley Wommack (Monroe). Georgia College tacked on two more in the second in another in the third to give them a 5-1 lead after three innings of play.

The bats exploded on both sides in the fifth inning, with each squad posting a four-spot in its respective half-inning. Wommack accounted for three of those runs with a bomb over the rightfield wall to reclaim the lead for the Bobcats.  Later on in the frame, Garrett Green (Bogart) laced an RBI single up the middle to give the Bobcats a 9-5 lead after five.

Georgia College extended its lead in the seventh when catcher Brandon Purcell (Glennville) smacked a three-run shot over the centerfield wall to extend the lead out the final score of 12-5.

Sophomore Chandler Amason (Grayson) had his first PBC outing of the year in game one and threw four outstanding innings to keep the Jags at bay.  The righthander completed the ballgame after entering in the sixth and did not allow a run while only allowing three hits and striking out three.

The roles were reversed in game two of the Saturday doubleheader with the Jags posting 13 runs on 17 hits compared to the Bobcats who tallied just five runs on 13.  The contest went back-and-forth throughout the first half of the game and was ultimately won by a six-spot from the Jags in the top of the seventh.

Green had another solid performance at the dish, going 2-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in.  Wommack was unstoppable at the plate Saturday afternoon, with two 3-for-4 performances, a total of five RBIs and a run scored.

Georgia College is back on the diamond when they travel to Shorter University for a non-conference mid-week matchup Wednesday, April 19 at 3 p.m.
