GREENWOOD, S.C. – The No. 26 Georgia College Baseball program (24-9, 11-6 PBC) defeated the Lander University Bearcats (17-20, 10-10 PBC) at Dolny Stadium Saturday afternoon, to clinch the weekend series with a 9-5 win.
Georgia College defeated the Bearcats by pushing across nine runs on a total of 11 hits while holding Lander to just five runs on 10 hits. The Bobcats set out to a comfortable early 8-0 lead, but the Bearcats clawed their way back into the game to ultimately lose by a score of 9-5 to spoil Lander's Region Champs ring ceremony.
The Bobcats got on the board early by posting a three-spot on the Bearcats in the first frame. Logan Mattix (Loganville, Georgia) continued his fantastic play in 2017 by driving in the first run of the game on an RBI single to left field. Later on in the inning with the bases loaded, Nate Schmal (Cumming, Georgia) drove in two more on a single to centerfield, giving the Bobcats an early 3-0 advantage heading into the second. Schmal had a nice day at the dish, going 2-for-4 with a trio of RBIs and a run scored.
The Bobcats maintained their lead until the fourth inning when they added another run on an RBI single from third baseman Cal Gentry (Perry, Georgia), giving them a 4-0 lead after four. Gentry fell back into his groove in the leadoff position going 3-for-5 with a pair of RBIs and a run.
Georgia College stretched their advantage even further in the top of the fifth after plating three more runs. The Bobcats drove in three runs on a sacrifice fly, an RBI single up the middle from second baseman Garrett Green (Bogart, Georgia), and with a defensive miscue from a Lander defender. With three runs in the fifth, the Bobcats held a comfortable 7-0 lead after five.
Schmal kept the Bobcat sticks going in the sixth with an RBI single to increase the cushion to 8-0. The Bearcats got the run right back when they managed to push across a pair of runners to cut their deficit to 8-2 after six innings of play.
The Bobcat bullpen limited the Bearcats to just three runs for the remainder of the contest to secure the win and the series for Georgia College, 9-5.
Junior Charlie Hecht (Johns Creek, Georgia) earned his fourth victory of the season after tossing five innings, allowing two earned on six hits and seven punch outs. Sophomore Logan Howard (Cumming, Georgia) added two solid innings of relief work without allowing a baserunner and fanning two.
Georgia College looks to complete the sweep of the Lander Bearcats in an early afternoon matchup Sunday, April 8 at 1 p.m.
