Box Score

By: Reid Van Woert, Sports Information Graduate Assistant

GREENWOOD, S.C. – The No. 26 Georgia College Baseball program (25-9, 12-6 PBC) completed their sweep of the Lander University Bearcats (17-21, 10-11 PBC) with a huge 15-2 win at Dolny Stadium Sunday afternoon.  With this series win over Lander, Georgia College has now won five straight Peach Belt Conference (PBC) series.

The Bobcat offense continued to put up outstanding numbers, posting a massive 15 runs on 14 hits to defeat the Bearcats who scored just two runs on seven hits.

The Bobcats set the tone early in the ballgame after posting two runs in the first frame off a two-run blast from centerfielder Logan Mattix (Loganville, Georgia).

The Bearcats tacked one on in the bottom of the second, but the Bobcats answered with a four-spot in the top of the third.  Wesley Wommack (Monroe, Georgia) got things started with a bases-loaded single that drove in one and the next batter Nate Schmal (Cumming, Georgia) knocked in another on a sacrifice fly to left.  Clayten Ayres (Kennewick, Washington) and Brendan Holler (Gilroy, California) followed them up with back-to-back RBI singles to extend the Bobcat lead to 6-1 after the top of the third.  Wommack had a nice day at the dish going 3-for-5 while driving in two runs and scoring three of his own.

The Bearcats got one back in the bottom of the third, but the Bobcat offense continued to put up crooked numbers in the fourth.  Senior Brandon Benson (Loganville, Georgia) smacked his 18th home run of the year to drive in three more runs, giving the Bobcats a comfortable 9-2 lead after four.  Benson finished the ballgame going 2-for-4 with four RBIs and three runs scored.

Georgia College extended its lead even further with another round-tripper from Mattix that knocked in a pair of runs in the sixth.  Mattix now has 12 home runs in his 2017 campaign.  The Bobcats pushed across a total of four runs in the inning to make it a 13-2 ballgame after six.  Mattix concluded his huge day going 3-for-5 with four RBIs and three runs scored.

The Bobcats plated a run in both the seventh and eighth inning as well, but the cushion was plenty for the Georgia College arms to close out the sweep.

Senior Trevor Guthrie (Cumming, Georgia) started on the bump for the Blue and Green and had himself an exceptional game.  The senior tossed seven complete innings while only allowing two earned on five hits while fanning five, bringing his record to 3-2 on the year.

The Bobcats are back in action Tuesday, April 11 at Albany State University in non-conference play.
