Bobcats Cut Down #2 North Georgia 7-6, Advance to PBC Title Game

Box Score

FLORENCE, S.C. – A five-run sixth and strong relief helped the Georgia College Baseball team (34-13) get past No. 2 University of North Georgia (42-10) Friday 7-6, advancing to the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Tournament title game.

The No. 3-seed Bobcats eliminate the No. 1-seed Nighthawks, and will await the winner of No. 5-seed UNC Pembroke and No. 6-seed Flagler College in tomorrow's title matchup at 1:30 p.m.

Down 5-2 heading into the sixth, the Bobcats posted five runs on five hits to jump in front for good. Logan Mattix (Loganville, Georgia) started with a single up the middle and two batters later was plated on a Clayten Ayres (Kennewick, Washington) single to center. After another out, the Bobcats rattled off three more hits, including a Garrett Green (Bogart, Georgia) double to score the remaining four.

After Trevor Guthrie (Cumming, Georgia) went 5 1/3 innings for the win (5-2), righty Perry Keith (LaGrange, Georgia) threw 2 2/3 innings scoreless allowing just a single hit, then closer Grant Khan (Richmond, Texas) tallied his eighth save with a 1-2-3 ninth.

Third baseman Cal Gentry (Perry, Georgia) finished 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a run, while Ayres went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored as well. Shortstop Brandon Benson (Loganville, Georgia) ripped a triple to the right-center gap in the third to score Gentry.

The win over the national-No. 2 Nighthawks is the highest ranked victory for Georgia College since beating the University of Tampa Feb. 12.

The Bobcats are back in action tomorrow, May 14 at 1:30 p.m.
