Box Score AMERICUS, Ga. – The No. 22 Georgia College Baseball team (4-4, 1-0 PBC) left little to doubt in starting off the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) season with a victory Friday, pounding Georgia Southwestern State University (2-3, 0-1 PBC) 28-1 on the road.
The 28 runs is the third time in the last two seasons that the Bobcats have scored 20-plus on GSW, and the most runs scored by GC Baseball since a 30-3 win over Clark Atlanta University last season.
Georgia College put up seven in the first and nine more in the second to lead 16-0 after two. The lead extended to 20-0 before the Hurricanes plated their lone run in the bottom of the fourth.
Righty Charlie Hecht (Johns Creek) was the benefactor of the run barrage, but tossed an easily-overlooked gem, going seven innings with a single run on five hits and a walk. The senior fanned 12, the most by a Bobcat pitcher since Matt LaMothe (2011-13) struck out 14 Clark Atlanta batters in 2013.
The Bobcats got the 28 runs without the benefit of a single home run. Georgia College did have nine extra-base hits, including three doubles from catcher Brandon Purcell (Glennville). He was 3-for-4 with four RBIs and three runs. Rightfielder Wesley Wommack (Monroe) was the lone four-hit performer, scoring four times and driving in two.
Shortstop Cal Gentry (Perry) was 3-for-5 with three runs and three RBIs, with his replacement Tarez Miller (McDonough) going 2-for-2 with a run, making the leadoff spot 5-for-7. Centerfielder Logan Mattix (Loganville) had three hits in six trips, driving in four and scoring three times. Outfielder Mike Warren (Stockbridge) had two hits, three RBIs and a run.
Third baseman Garrett Green (Bogart) had two hits, three runs and an RBI, and first baseman Matthew Miller (San Diego, California) posted two hits, four runs scored and one driven in. Leftfielder Nate Schmal (Cumming) had a 2-for-3 day, scoring once and driving in another, and second baseman Cassius Young (Atlanta) added two hits, two RBIs and two runs.
Righty Harrison Veldsma (Marietta) tossed a hitless ninth in his first pitching action as a Bobcat, missing last season with injury.
The Bobcats complete the three-game series with GSW tomorrow, Feb. 17 at 1 p.m. in doubleheader action.
