Two-Out Magic Helps #22 GC Baseball Past Young Harris, 9-2

Box Score

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Scoring seven runs with two outs during the contest, the No. 22 Georgia College Baseball team (7-4, 4-0 PBC) stayed perfect in Peach Belt Conference (PBC) play, dropping Young Harris College (6-6, 2-2 PBC) 9-2 Friday night at John Kurtz Field.

The Bobcats got another gem from senior Charlie Hecht (Johns Creek) as the righty spun seven scoreless innings with just two hits and three walks with seven strikeouts. Hecht (3-0) set down the minimum for three straight innings, and only allowed one runner to reach third base.

Georgia College wasted little time getting the scoring barrage started, as after two outs and a hit batsman in the first, centerfielder Logan Mattix (Loganville) lifted a pitch that clanged off the light pole in left center for a two-run home run. After two more hits, rightfielder Mike Warren (Atlanta) delivered a two-run single to center for a 4-0 lead. Shortstop Cal Gentry (Perry) added a solo home run in the fourth, his second this season.

Catcher Brandon Purcell (Tennille) went 3-for-5 with two doubles, scoring once. Warren finished 2-for-4 with a run. Leftfielder Nate Schmal (Cumming) was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI, while both Matthew Miller (San Diego, California) and Garrett Green (Bogart) had 2-for-4 games, each scoring a run.

The outfield trio of Mattix, Warren and Schmal combined to go 5-for-14 with a home run, five RBIs and three runs scored.

The Bobcats are back in action tomorrow, Feb. 24 at 1 p.m., playing a doubleheader to finish the series with Young Harris.
