Big Days from Wommack and Mattix Lead #22 GC Baseball to 13-3 Win

Box Score

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - The No. 22 Georgia College Baseball team (15-6) cruised to a 13-3 win over Albany State University (8-7) Tuesday afternoon thanks in large part to a five RBI performance from Wesley Wommack (Monroe), and four RBIs from Logan Mattix (Loganville).

The Bobcats jumped to a 1-0 lead thanks to Mattix's first RBI of the day. A Mattix single brought in Cal Gentry (Perry) for what would we be a short-lived advantage. Albany State responded the next half inning by grabbing two runs and a one-run lead. It would be their last lead of the day.

Matthew Miller (San Diego, California) tied the game in the bottom of the second with a sacrifice fly to bring in Garrett Green (Bogart). Moments later, Wommack took the ball over the right field wall for a two-run home run and 4-2 Bobcat lead.

Georgia College piled on in the third, adding runs thanks to a bases-loaded walk and a wild pitch before Wommack singled up the middle to bring in two more Bobcats for a 8-2 advantage.

The Bobcats held off the scoring onslaught for one inning before jumping on Golden Rams pitching once again in the fifth. A three-run opposite-field home run from Mattix put Georgia College up 11-2. A Brandt Stallings (Buford, Ga.) double down the leftfield line brought in the fourth Bobcat run of the inning and the 12th of the day.

The 13th and final Bobcat run came in the sixth inning when Wommack picked up RBI number five with a groundout that brought in Eric Furphy (Suwanee).

The Bobcats used six pitchers on the day. Trevor Evans (Milledgeville, Ga.) started on the hill for Georgia College, going 2.0 innings and allowing two earned runs. Harrison Veldsma (Marietta) was the most effective of the bunch, throwing three scoreless innings and picking up his first career win. Kyle King (Johns Creek) contributed two scoreless innings of his own.

Georgia College returns to action on Friday, March 16 to begin an important weekend series at the University of North Georgia. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
