Box Score AUGUSTA, Ga. – The No. 13 Georgia College Baseball team (32-8, 23-2 PBC) matched its school record for Peach Belt Conference (PBC) victories Friday night, taking out Augusta University (12-30, 7-21 PBC) 11-2 on the road.
The 2007 Georgia College Baseball team was the last regular-season PBC Champion for the school, going 23-7 against conference competition that year.
The Bobcats jumped in front in the top of the first, senior Nate Schmal (Cumming) plating a pair with a double down the leftfield line. A five-spot in the sixth would push it out of reach.
In that inning, senior Brandon Purcell (Glennville) doubled home a run, and classmates Mike Warren (Atlanta) and Matthew Miller (San Diego, California) each tallied run-scoring singles.
Senior righty Charlie Hecht (Johns Creek) had another strong outing, spinning six innings with just two runs, scattering six hits and two walks. Hecht fanned seven to improve to 9-0 on the season. Junior Bradly Cammack (Soperton) finished off the final three frames for his fifth save.
Purcell was a one-man wrecking crew, going 4-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs, including three doubles. Schmal was 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs as well, and senior Logan Mattix (Loganville) had a pair of doubles in four trips with three runs scored.
The Bobcats are now 23-2 in PBC play, tops in league standings. The win keeps Georgia College three games ahead of Columbus State University in the loss column. The Bobcats have clinched a PBC playoff spot, and can finish no lower than third.
The Bobcats are back in action tomorrow, April 21 at 2 p.m. in game two of the three-game set with the Jaguars.
