#13 GC Baseball Victorious over Lander in Game Two, 9-3.

Box Score

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The No. 13 Georgia College Baseball program (26-7, 18-2 PBC) sealed another Peach Belt Conference (PBC) series Saturday afternoon, with a 9-3 win over the Lander University Bearcats (12-23, 6-14 PBC) at John Kurtz Field.

The Bobcats struck first in the bottom half of the opening frame with an RBI single from Matthew Miller (San Diego, California), but the Bearcats answered with a two-spot in the top of the second.  Miller drove in another run on a fielder's choice in the bottom half to tie the game at 2-to-2 heading in to the third inning.

The bulk of the Bobcats offensive production came in the fifth and sixth inning.  The fifth inning rally started with a single off the bat Wesley Wommack (Monroe) who then scored off a triple from Logan Mattix (Loganville).  Mattix finished his afternoon going 4-for-5 with three RBIs and a home run shy of the cycle.  Brandon Purcell (Glennville) knocked in Mattix on a two-out single to left center, followed by monstrous two-run shot from Brandt Stallings (Buford) giving the Bobcats a 6-2 advantage after five.

A three-run sixth for Georgia College put the game out of reach courtesy of a single from Mattix that drove in two, along with a pass ball to break the game open at 9-2 after six. The Bearcats managed to claw one back in the seventh but it was not enough to top the stout Bobcat offense.

Senior Trevor Guthrie (Cumming) arguably had the best start of his 2018 campaign hurling a season-high 6 1/3 innings, allowing seven hits and two earned runs with four strikeouts.  Logan Howard (Cumming) secured the victory for the Bobcats with 2 2/3 shutout innings of stellar relief work only giving up two hits.

Georgia College looks to make it 11 straight and complete the sweep over the Bearcats Sunday, April 8 at 1 p.m.
