AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Georgia College Softball team (34-17, 12-8 PBC) finished its regular season in style Saturday, taking two games at Augusta University (18-30, 7-23 PBC) by scores of 8-5 and 2-1.
In game one, the Bobcats trailed 3-2 heading into the sixth. GC jumped in front when catcher Haley Howell (Rochelle) brought in two runs on a single up the middle.
Georgia College added four more in the seventh for insurance, three coming in on a bases-loaded double by Howell.
Senior Kayla Price (Indian Land, South Carolina) improved to 9-4 with the win, throwing six innings, allowing just a single earned run.
Howell finished 2-for-4 with five RBIs and a double. She was flanked by a 2-for-3 effort with two runs from rightfielder Sarah Couch (Madison). Centerfielder Darby Pinkard (Acworth) added a pair of singles and an RBI of her own.
Game two scoring was at a premium, the 2-1 game decided by a fielder's choice RBI in the top of the seventh.
Third baseman Jessie Barre (Pooler) got the Bobcats up in the first with a single down the leftfield line, but Augusta answered with a run in the bottom half. The two teams remained scoreless until the seventh.
In the top of the last frame, Lindley Bruce (Kennesaw) got the Bobcats going with a leadoff double. Rookie Skyler Welford (Bonaire) then entered as a pinch runner, taking third on a passed ball. After an out, second baseman Carlie Behan (Cumming) sent a ball back to the pitcher and Welford avoided the tag at the plate for the go-ahead run.
Freshman reliever Rachel Wolverton (Valdosta) buzzed through hitters for 5 1/3 innings to improve to 4-0 on the year. She scattered three hits and three walks, fanning three.
The win puts Georgia College at 12-8, taking the No. 5-seed in the upcoming Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Tournament. The Bobcats will travel to Dahlonega to take on No. 4-seed Flagler College in the opening round.
The PBC Softball Tournament begins Friday, May 3 with more details to follow.
