Box Score MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – With a rain-shortened schedule for the 2020 GC Kickoff Classic, Georgia College Softball (1-0) played just one game Saturday, a 4-3 victory over Shorter University (0-1) at the Peeler Complex.
The Bobcats scratched across runs in each of the first three innings to set the tone. Sophomore Jessie Barre (Pooler) dropped a single to shallow right center to score Carlie Behan (Cumming) in the first.
The second run came in on the first career hit for freshman Brooke Lougher (Suwanee) in the second. Barre drove in Behan with another single in the third, and then capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the fifth, again plating Behan.
Barre finished 2-for-2 with three RBIs. Behan had a double and a triple, scoring three runs. Sophomore Ariel Edenfield (Dublin) had two hits in three trips with a run.
Senior Amber Coy (Warner Robins)—a four-year starting infielder—made her first pitching appearance in relief. The senior entered in the first with the bases loaded and no one out. Coy induced back-to-back groundouts to third, allowing Barre to cut down the lead runner at the plate, then nabbed a strikeout to get GC off the hook.
Coy (1-0) threw four innings, allowing six hits and two runs. She walked three and fanned two. Sophomore Hannah Rogers (Marietta) got the final three outs for the save in her first career pitching appearance.
Soggy field conditions have also shortened Sunday's action at the GC Kickoff Classic. No. 5 Young Harris College and Shorter will meet at 1 p.m. for a single game, with the Bobcats and the University of Montevallo to follow.
