AMERICUS, Ga. – The Georgia College Men's Basketball team (10-14, 7-9 PBC) battled to a 72-68 defeat on the road Saturday at Georgia Southwestern State University (9-13, 4-12 PBC).
Georgia College led for a good portion of the first half, including a high point of 17-11 at near the 11 minute mark. A three by Wesley Simpson (DeLand, Florida/Union Grove HS (Ga.)) would give GC a 35-32 advantage at the break.
The Hurricanes would quickly take over in the second half, taking their first lead at 18:19 mark on a three by Devon Higgs. An 11-2 run beginning with just under seven minutes remaining would help GSW take a bit stronger hold of the game.
A Brandon Thomas (McDonough) three would cut the Hurricane lead to 69-68 with 49 seconds remaining, but the Bobcats remaining attempts would be off the mark for the 72-68 finish.
Junior Jordan Thomas (Conyers) and freshman Brandon Thomas shared the team lead with 15 points apiece for GC. Jordan Thomas hit 7-for-14 form the floor and pulled in five rebounds. Brandon Thomas made three attempts from long range, adding four boards of his own.
The Bobcats were out-shot 39 percent to 43 percent from the floor, and GSW had a commanding 23-9 advantage in free-throws made during the contest. The Bobcats kept it close by leading in bench points 32-24 and second-chance points 18-5.
The loss drops the Bobcats to 7-9 in league play, tied for seventh in the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) standings. The top eight advance to the PBC Tournament March 4.
The Bobcats are back in action Wednesday, Feb. 19 at 7:30 p.m., playing host to Francis Marion University for Faculty Appreciation Day at the Centennial Center.
