Box Score DAHLONEGA, Ga. – The No. 8 Georgia College Baseball team (10-1, 6-1 PBC) never trailed Saturday at No. 20 University of North Georgia (10-4, 7-4 PBC) holding off a late rally to clinch the series with an 8-7 victory.
The win, combined with yesterday's 7-4 victory, gives the Bobcats their second Peach Belt Conference (PBC) series of the season and a chance at a sweep tomorrow.
The Bobcats wasted little time getting going, shortstop Cassius Young (Atlanta) doubling home a run before scoring on a KC Brown (Rincon) single for a 2-0 lead before North Georgia came to the plate.
Third baseman Noah Mendlinger (Alpharetta) doubled the advantage with one swing of the bat, a two-run home run on the first pitch he saw in the fourth. It was Mendlinger's second home run of the season.
The eighth was a big inning for the Bobcats, bringing in three runs including an RBI double from Brown. UNG made a late comeback, cutting the lead to one in the ninth on a solo shot from Brady Eeles, but couldn't get the game-tying runner on.
Senior starter Harrison Veldsma (Marietta) threw 5 1/3 innings with two runs and three strikeouts. The big righty improved to 3-0 on the year. Lefty Jacob Hester (Marietta) got the final four outs for his first collegiate save.
Young finished 3-for-5 with the RBI and two runs. Mendlinger had two hits in four trips, driving in a pair and scoring once, while Brown finished 2-for-5 with two RBIs.
The Bobcats will look for the series sweep tomorrow, March 1 at 1 p.m.
