Box Score AUGUSTA, Ga. – A bid for a season sweep came up short Saturday for Georgia College Men's Basketball (13-15, 10-10 PBC) as the Bobcats lost at Augusta University (21-7, 16-4 PBC) 84-76 in overtime.
Augusta jumped out to a 10-2 run to start the game, but the Bobcats battled back, taking a lead for the first time at 21-20 at the 6:40 mark on a pair of free-throws by freshman Austin Sloan (Warner Robins). The run started there, as GC led 43-29 by the halftime horn.
A three-point play at the two minute mark for Augusta's Darren Lucas-White tied the game 65-65, and after Jordan Thomas (Conyers) put GC in front with two free-throws, the Jaguars tied the game on a Robert Barlund layup with 11 seconds left. The Bobcats turned it over, and Augusta missed a game-winner at the end of regulation.
The Jaguars won the game at the free-throw line, going 15-for-16 from the stripe in the extra period, attributing for 15 of their 18 points in the frame.
Sophomore Wesley Simpson (DeLand, Florida/Union Grove HS (Ga.)) led the Bobcats with 21 points, shooting 8-for-15 from the field. He also pulled in a team-best eight rebounds. Jordan Thomas had 19 points, including all eight free-throw attempts, and five assists.
Junior Justin Cave (Savannah) had 14 points, and freshman Brandon Thomas (McDonough) added 10. Sloan finished with eight points.
The loss finishes the regular season for GC Men's Basketball at 10-10 in Peach Belt Conference (PBC) play. The Bobcats are tied with Flagler College for sixth in the league standings, but will probably be looking at the No. 7-seed after losing both regular-season meetings with the Saints. Should that be the case, it looks like the Bobcats will head back to Augusta for a third meeting with the No. 2-seed Jaguars Wednesday, March 4.
Official seeding of the PBC Tournament will come tomorrow, March 1 at the conclusion of the game between UNC Pembroke and Georgia Southwestern State University.
