AUGUSTA, Ga. – Returning to the site of their upset win in the 2020 Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Quarterfinal, the Georgia College Men's Basketball team (1-1, 1-1 PBC) couldn't strike a second time, falling 69-63 at Augusta University (3-0, 1-0 PBC) Saturday.
Senior Kohl Roberts (Atlanta) and junior Wesley Simpson (DeLand, Florida/Union Grove HS [Ga.]) shared the team lead with 14 points apiece.
Roberts was 4-for-8 from the floor, hit six free throws and added eight rebounds. Simpson led the team with nine caroms, and went 7-for-8 from the free-throw line. Classmate Christian Koneman (Chatsworth) aided with 11 points, including a pair from long range.
The Bobcats got the game to a single-possession contest with 47 seconds left, thanks to a steal and acrobatic lay-in by Jordan Thomas (Conyers) to make it 65-63. The GC Men could inch no closer, missing a pair of threes the rest of the way, one of which would have tied the game. Thomas finished with eight points.
The game was tight throughout, featuring 10 ties and 13 lead changes. The Bobcats led as late as the 4:15 mark in the second half on a Simpson layup. Augusta did just enough from there to keep GC at arm's length.
The Bobcats are back in action Wednesday, Jan. 13 at 7:30 p.m., traveling to Georgia Southwestern State University.
