MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Georgia College senior Jordan Thomas (Conyers) knocked down a step-back three at the 15:20 mark in the first half, breaking the school's career scoring record on the way to the Bobcats (10-1) beating Anderson University (7-6) 83-81 Friday at the Centennial Center.
Thomas topped the old mark of 1,912 set by GC Hall of Famer Robert Williams (1977), a record that stood for 44 years. Thomas finished the game with a team-high 23 points and now has 1,934 in his outstanding career.
The eighth-straight win for Georgia College didn't come easy, as the Bobcats trailed the Trojans as late as 6:47 left at 67-65, and were tied at 74-74 with just under two minutes left.
At that mark, junior Wesley Simpson (DeLand, Florida/Union Grove HS [Ga.]) found freshman Zyair Greene (Lithonia) on the left wing, who had just entered the contest on the previous game-tying free-throw. Entering the game for the first time in the second half, Greene drained the three for his only points of the game, giving GC the lead for good.
After two points from Anderson, Thomas knocked down a deep three on the next possession to inch the lead out further. The Trojans wouldn't go down easy, as James Crosby hit a three to cut the lead to one, and Thomas answered by crashing to the hoop for a lay-in. Another two points from Crosby made it 82-81 with 1.1 seconds left, and the Bobcats closed it out at the free-throw line.
Thomas finished with the 23 points, adding five rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocks. Simpson had 13 points, a team-high six assists and five rebounds. Junior Chris Parks (Buford) chipped in 12 points and five boards.
GC now extends its win streak to eight in a row. The Bobcats are also 4-0 at home this season. The Bobcats had a 42-36 rebounding advantage, helping toward a 44-28 lead in points in the paint.
With the three steals, Thomas now has 153 in his career, passing J.J. Madden (1996) for fifth in school history.
