MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College Men's Basketball team (9-2, 9-2 PBC) recovered from some early-game struggles to stretch a win streak to eight in a row, topping Clayton State University (0-8, 0-8 PBC) 72-60 Saturday in the Centennial Center.
The Bobcats got a balanced effort tonight, with four double-digit scorers and 10 of the 12 that played reaching the scoring column. GC was led by 18 points from senior Jordan Thomas (Conyers), shooting 7-for-13 overall and 3-for-6 from long range.
Senior Kohl Roberts (Atlanta) saw his double-double streak close at three games, going for 11 points and nine rebounds in today's action. Junior Wesley Simpson (DeLand, Florida/Union Grove HS [Ga.]) added 13 points and six boards, while senior Justin Cave (Savannah) provided a spark off the bench, netting 12 points in his first action this season, coming off an injury. Cave hit a pair from long range and was 5-for-9 overall. Another bench spark was junior Chris Parks (Buford) who added eight hard-fought points and four rebounds, including three on the offensive glass.
The Bobcats trailed by as much as 10 points early, as the Lakers owned a 21-11 advantage after a Jordan Curtis three-pointer with 12:10 left in the first half. Simpson banked a half-court heave at the buzzer, giving the Bobcats a 36-34 lead at the half.
GC never trailed in the second half, starting off on an 11-5 run. Thomas provided 10 of his 18 in the second half.
The Bobcats out-shot Clayton 42 percent to 37 percent from the floor, and dominated the rebounding battle 55-32. Points in the paint were also controlled by GC, to the tune of 46-16, or plus-30.
With a trio of three-pointers today, Thomas passed John John Steensland (2000) for second in school history with 224. The school's all-time leader is Shaun Keaton (2009) with 244.
The win puts GC at 9-2, good for second in the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Standings. The top four teams advance to the PBC Tournament, beginning March 3.
