MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College Men's Basketball team (10-2, 10-2 PBC) finished the regular season undefeated at home, taking out the University of North Georgia (2-8, 2-8 PBC) 77-62 Thursday night at the Centennial Center.
The Bobcats withstood a long-distance barrage from North Georgia, the Nighthawks making 12 threes and shooting 48 percent from beyond the arc. As a result, GC's win streak moves to nine straight.
Senior Jordan Thomas (Conyers) led all scorers with 18 points, adding four rebounds and going 6-for-7 from the line in a physical contest. Junior Christian Koneman (Chatsworth) made a huge impact off the bench, tallying his first career double-double with 15 points and 10 boards. He also swatted a pair of shots.
Senior Kohl Roberts (Atlanta) finished with 11 points on 5-for-10 shooting, adding nine boards and a trio of steals. Junior Wesley Simpson (DeLand, Florida/Union Grove HS [Ga.]) added 11 points with a team-high five assists and four steals.
The Bobcats jumped out early, leading 22-7 at the 10:35 mark in the first half. To their credit, UNG clawed their way back into it with a 20-8 run of their own, and GC led at the half 37-34. Koneman had 10 points by halftime.
Second half action was more of the same, as both teams went on runs back and forth. GC never trailed, but the Nighthawks cut the lead to one possession mid-way through the second half. The Bobcats held UNG to just one point over the final two minutes to pull away.
The Bobcats edged UNG in rebounding 39-31, controlling paint scoring by a 30-16 advantage. GC caused more than twice as many turnovers as they coughed up, a 13-6 clip.
With his scoring tonight, Thomas eclipsed the 1,700 mark in his career at GC. He now has 1,716, passing Louis McCollough (2005) of Francis Marion University for ninth in Peach Belt history.
The win puts GC at 10-2, good for second in the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Standings. The top four teams advance to the PBC Tournament, beginning March 4. The PBC Men's Basketball regular season closes Monday. If the current standings hold up, the Bobcats would host a Quarterfinal matchup in the Centennial Center.
