MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College Baseball team (11-5, 10-5 PBC) took both ends of a doubleheader from No. 16 Columbus State University (10-6, 9-6 PBC) Saturday at John Kurtz Field, winning game one 9-6 and taking game two 9-8 in 12 innings.
In game one, the Bobcats had a pair of three-run innings late to pull in front of CSU for good.
Down 4-3 heading into the bottom of the sixth, GC got three to take the lead. The big blow was a two-run single from first baseman Brandon Bellflower (Milledgeville).
After a run from CSU cut the lead to 6-5, the Bobcats got three more in the seventh. All three runs came in on a bases-loaded double to left from leftfielder Jay Saunders (Moultrie).
Lefty starter Bryce Bowen (Bowman) improved to 1-1 with six innings of work, not allowing an earned run among the four that scored. Noah Mendlinger (Alpharetta) held onto the lead, turning it over to Brennan Crooms (Metter) for a scoreless ninth to pick up his second save.
Designated hitter Baylin Moore (Albany) was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Mendlinger also finished 2-for-3, scoring a run. Second baseman Cal Gentry (Perry) finished with two hits, also scoring twice.
Game two was a marathon, won by a Gentry single in the 12th inning.
The Bobcats nearly didn't get there, as it required a three-run rally in the bottom of the ninth. Two came in on a single from Cassius Young (Atlanta) and Mendlinger tied the game with a run-scoring single to right.
After two scoreless innings came the 12th. Moore got it started with a single to left. After a sacrifice bunt and a hit batsman, Gentry rifled a 2-0 pitch past a diving second baseman to score Moore from second and end the game.
Sophomore Ashton Sturgell (Evans) got the win in four scoreless innings, scattering just two hits and a walk. He fanned five while improving to 2-0.
The Bobcats got hits from every spot in the order in game two, rattling off 16 as a team. Gentry finished with three, tallying a run and the game's most important RBI. Young finished with two hits and two driven in, while rightfielder Paul Grazzini (Marietta) posted two hits with two runs and an RBI.
Saunders and Mendlinger each went 2-for-5 with two RBI, while Moore entered as a pinch hitter, finishing 2-for-2 and scoring the game-winner.
Gentry's five hits today give the senior 280 in his career, passing Logan Mattix (2018) for seventh in school history. Gentry has also scored 195 runs in his career, passing GC Hall of Famer Phil Arp (1983) for eighth.
