White Walk-Off Helps GC Baseball Beat West Georgia, 8-6

Box Score

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Junior Matt White (Lakeland) blasted a 3-2 pitch over the leftfield fence for a walk-off victory as Georgia College Baseball (12-9) beat the University of West Georgia (10-14) 8-6 Tuesday at John Kurtz Field.

It was all GC in the early going, as a four-run fourth put the Bobcats up 5-1. Noah Mendlinger (Alpharetta) and Sam Sly (Atlanta) provided RBI singles in the inning.

Up 6-1 after five straight scoreless innings from their defense, GC looked on the verge of cruising to a win. A five-run eighth for West Georgia stopped that plan right in its tracks.

Knotted up at 6-6 heading into the bottom of the ninth, Mendlinger led off by getting hit by a pitch. After White came up empty on two sacrifice bunt attempts, he worked the count back to full at 3-2, setting up for his laser-beam shot to left into the batting cages and another Bobcat win.

Righty reliever Ashton Sturgell (Evans) threw two innings to get the win (3-0), allowing a single run on two hits and fanning a pair. Bryson Smeltzer (Savannah), Luc Scudellari (Roswell), Chris Rolick (Marietta) and Forrest Wilson (Marietta) combined to hold the Wolves scoreless from the third-through-seventh innings. The quartet totaled just two hits, three walks and three strikeouts during that stretch.

Mendlinger finished 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Centerfielder Cam Hill (Marietta) was also 2-for-4 with a triple, scoring twice. First baseman Ben Tuten (Bristol) was 2-for-2 in a reserve role.

The Bobcats are back in action Friday, April 2 at 6 p.m., hosting Georgia Southwestern State University.
